Ski season at Dodge Ridge, minutes from the cabin
Hummingbird Lodge sits in Twain Harte, about twenty minutes below Dodge Ridge, and a few miles up the 108 highway from Sonora, California. You can ski all day and still be in the hot tub before dark.
Dodge Ridge is the Sierra ski area locals keep to themselves. It is smaller than the Tahoe resorts, and that is the point. Lift lines stay short, the runs suit families, and the drive up from the cabin follows Highway 108 through the pines rather than a crowded interstate.
The season usually runs from December into early spring, snow permitting. Weekends fill first, so book lessons and rentals ahead. On storm days, carry chains; Highway 108 is a mountain road and the chain requirement is enforced when it snows.
Not a skier? Winter in Twain Harte still works. Sledding hills sit closer than the resort, Pinecrest Lake is a short drive for a snowy walk, and the village has restaurants for the evening.
The cabin sleeps thirteen, with a game room, a piano, and room for the whole crew to dry their gloves.
